A FEW
WORDS TO SHARE REGARDING THIS PLAY OF MINE…
_Latha
Ramakrishnan
I happened to see the play MANIMEKALAI
bywriter Veli Rangarajan whose plays have earned a place for themselves in
contemporary Tamil Literature.
*Manimekalai is a legendary epic and its
female protagonist whose ‘Atchayapaathra’(the classic bowl) which satiated the
hunger of countless persons being ever full has come to symbolically represent
many things in life.
In the final scene of the play the actress
who played the character Manimekalai got down from the dais and walked amidst
the audience acting as if she was offering some of them food from an imaginary
bowl. And, when I received a handful
from her in a willing suspension of disbelief state of mind the seed for
this play must have got planted in the
depth of my heart.
Originally
written in English this play of mine was published in Muse India Internet
Magazine and even won acclaim and a prize money of Rs.500 several years ago.
Subsequently I translated this play into Tamil and it got published in a Tamil
Literary Monthly Pudhupunal in its October 2009 issue. At this juncture I convey my thanks to both
these magazines for publishing this play of mine.
