A note on AZHAGIYASINGER, Editor, Navina Virutcham and the compiler of the Anthology of Virutcham Poems titled .Virutcham Kavidhaikal’

Original name Chandramouli. He has been contributing as a poet, short-story writer and also the editor of a Tamil Literary Magazine by name Navina Virutcham, actively engaged in doing his might to enrich Contemporary Tamil Literature.

So far , his two poem-collections titled ‘Yaarudanum Illai’ ( ‘With None’ - 1995) and ‘Tholaiyadha Dhooram’( ‘The Distance That Never Ceases To Be’ – 2001) and also a volume of his full collection of poems have been published. Already three short-story collections of Azhagiyasinger have been published. His short-story titled Uncle has fetched him the prestigious Katha Award. And, he has received the esteemed ‘Thirupur Thamizh Sangam Award for his translation-work titled ‘Yugantha’.

Azhagiyasinger’s poems and short-stories have been translated into English, Hindi , Punjabi and several other Indian language.

Single-handedly and steadfastly, unmindful of the fact that his literary efforts have not been duly recognized, he has been publishing the Tamil Literary Quarterly ‘Navina Virutcham which has provided place for many a promising writer and poet to prove their worth, for the past 20 years.

Further, Azhagiyasinger has also published several meritorious works of contemporary writers through Virutcham Veliyidu.

And, he has organized many a literary meet as part of his Virutcham activities.

He is working as an officer in Indian Bank and now stationed in Myladuthurai, Tamil Nadu. His family lives in Chennai.


VIRUTCHAM KAVIDHAIKAL – A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

( Excerpts from INTRODUCTION TO VIRUTCHAM KAVIDHAIKAL that has appeared in the first volume of Virutcham Kavidhaikal )

Neo-Poetry or Modern-Poetry has come to stay. The initial doubts and apprehensions have disappeared, gradually, in course of time. How can words arranged in lines with no rhyme and meter, i.e., ‘Yadhugai’ and ‘Monai’ become a poem? - so there were many who debated endlessly. Yet, the magnetism of Neo-Poetry proved to be such that more and more discerning readers have been steadily drawn into its fold. It is not that the Prose-Poetry is without rhyme and meter. They are there in it, in a different, more expansive and inclusive form, with a new set of rules of sort. This new form or norm has made poetry-writing and reading easily accessible and it helped establish each poet’s exclusive identity. But, it should be remembered that this freedom is not all that unconditional, for, with all its easy usage of words without adhering to any rigid set of rules, it demands a depth that qualifies it as poetry. Hence, though its form has turned simpler its content turned heavy and ambiguous. And, this ambiguity came in the way of understanding the neo-poetry. This problem of understanding is associated with the poems of the ‘small magazines or alternate magazines…

The history of Modern Tamil Poetry highlights Bharathiar as its pioneer. The small magazines that followed him, cherished and nourished this prose-poetry as the new form of Poetry. At that time the theme of these poems was anything. Simple issues, feelings, daily life, social life and one’s comments and viewpoints on them – all these formed the subject-matter of Poetry. During that period the form and outward shape of poem were concentrated upon more. The commercial magazines aped the form of the neo-poetry without bothering about the essential requirements of its content – ambiguity, intensity and depth and published mostly the poems of academicians and film-lyricists. And, the readers who happened to read such pseudo neo-poems in pop magazines began to feel tired of them. It was at this time many started writing poetry and various theories of Poetry began to do their rounds. It was a time when readers of Poetry grew lesser in number and the writers, the reverse. Thus, on one side the form of prose-poetry became popular and soon lost its hold. At the same time the real Neo-Tamil Poetry Movement grew in Small Magazines and moved on to attain various dimensions. They analyzed the various aspects of man’s inner life with a genuine passion and in all seriousness. Hence, the expertise of blending the social life with that of man’s inner life, and, studying and revealing its shades and nuances in this perspective and with this perspective gained momentum. Poetry gained depth. And, this gave rise to the ambiguous nature of neo-Tamil poetry, not easy to understand. Hence, poetry tended to look more alien. To attain a balance in this, it becomes imperative to have the reader too partake in the creation of the poem. To get the feel of the same experiences that a poet gains during the process of creating a poem , the reader is expected to rise himself to the same elevated state. In other words, while reading a poem, attuning himself to it the reader too has to create it. With the help of the same words and their meanings the reader is expected to complete it. This is the only way that helps the reader to comprehend the essence of the poem concerned and to test the strength of it.

The underlying theme-content of Today’s Neo-Tamil Poetry can be classified as follows: Social and sociological aspects, the intricacies of the individual mind and also its mysteries and multi-dimensions. The first and foremost duty of Poetry is to give forth a vision. This vision which is hidden in the labyrinth of word and meaning is retrieved as the poet’s experience, and, through an inner activity that takes place in him it takes on the shape of Poetry. This is why the vision and the experience and the words merge as one whole, losing their separate identity. In harmony with Nature and moving through the social life, the experiences that the poet’s heart so obtained giving a vision to him which is revealed in his poetry born of his poetic heart that speaks volumes. As a reaction to the experience caused by Nature and Social environment, Poetry is stirred. As the response of the vision gained by the experience, the poem takes place. In such poems high values of life and the seeds of catharsis are inherently available. And, in the poems that are born with these ingredients the socio-cultural and individualistic aspects of man’s external and internal life are studied and explored.

The poems of the first volume of Virutcham Kavidhaikal bear testimony to the fact that the neo-poems of Tamil are rich both in style and content and that they are universal in their appeal and can withstand the test of Time.

Till recently the situation was that many a quality work that were being published in the 'little magazines' of Tamil couldn't be brought forth as a collection, as a book. Hence, if someone were to learn about those magazines after a sizeable number of years and feel like reading them, there was no access for realizing this wish. Thus, the literary endeavours of little magazines had to remain unnoticed. Those who contributed to the literary or little magazines had to remain the ‘Unsung Heroes’ of Tamil Literary Field till their life-time and even beyond that. We can claim that the situation is now changed for the better, but, to some extent only; we have a long way to go.

It was only after the review in Dinamani Sudar on the Collection of Tamil poems titled 'Zha Kavithaigal' an academician visited us in person to enquire after the existence of such a literary magazine. Seen in this light, we can well understand the need for compiling the writings - poems, short-stories, essays, literary reviews, editorials of these small magazines as Anthologies to highlight the contribution of Small Magazines toward changing the literary trends, reading habits and also the way they posed a challenge to the mainstream, commercialization of literary sensibilities and sensitivities.

Thus, I set out to publish the Virutcham poems and short-stories as Anthologies. Selected poems from the Virutcham issues during a five year span between 1988 - 93 were brought forth as an anthology titled Virutcham Kavidhaikal - Volume I. Poems of 94 poets, mostly more than one poem of each of those 94 poets, were included in the Anthology. Altogether there are 235 pages in the volume. This initiative was well-received by discerning readers. This Anthology of Virutcham Poems was reprinted in 2006.

When we study the common characteristics of the poems that have appeared in Virutcham issues we can well see that there has been significant changes, both in form and content in the making of Modern Tamil Poetry. Brevity of words which is the essential quality of Poetry can be seen in all these poems of Virutcham. And also, the 'pleasure of reading'.

The act of writing a poem and also the reading of a poem gives one a strange kind of feeling. It is the experience of a visionary, made possible even without the creator consciously striving to make it possible. And, reading a poem gives one the feel of a kind of inexplicable joy mixed with sweet surprise!

Today, Neo-Tamil Poems are born on various levels. Those using melodramatic words and expressions, those which sound didactic, preaching from a pedestal, employing empty rhetoric do not offer any catharsis or pleasure to the readers. And, it is a fact that real poignant Neo Tamil Poetry can be found in the Small Magazines only, even today. It is to be noted here that the Middle Magazines have expanded the space of Modern Tamil Poets.

Today, when one has to be in the midst of a maddening crowd, having to hear and witness things that prove repulsive to human sensitivity, Poetry provides some solace to the heart. Poetry feeds and soothes our battered minds. Also, by causing strange vibrations in our hearts, Poetry lends clarity to our perception of life and things. True, the reader has to seek and find such poems which have these qualities inherent in them.

In this Anthology poems were selected from the first 22 issues of Virutcham which is now in its 17th year of 'being' and this Anthology includes all the poets who have contributed in the said 22 issues. And, it has two noteworthy 'Introductory Essays on Modern Tamil Poetry, written by two poets of merit - poet Gnanakoothan and poet Ra.Srinivasan which give a precise account of the need and evolution of the Modern Tamil Poetry. I convey my sincere thanks to them once again. And, my especial thanks are due to fellow-poet Ra.Srinivasan for his contribution to Virutcham and also to the preparation of this Anthology. And, to all other fellow-writers and poets who have been contributing to Virutcham all these years and proving a steady source of support to its growth and sustenance.

Though I have learnt from my own experience that publishing books and the before and after endeavours that go into it prove a Herculean task, I still feel duty-bound to introduce the range and expanse of Neo-Tamil Poetry to the discerning readers outside Tamil Nadu and also to our own youth who may not be all that familiar with the potentials of Tamil Poetry. Therefore, I have now taken the initiative of publishing around 40 poems from Virutcham Anthology of Poems, in English. And, I sincerely hope that this initiative of Virutcham would be well-received. And, hopefully, more such initiatives would be undertaken in the coming years.

TRANSLATOR'S NOTE


LATHA RAMAKRISHNAN

While translating a text if we are to come across a stumbling block, how are we to overcome it? Are we to seek the assistance of others? If so, who should be those others? Or, without making the essence of the text suffer, can we bypass the particular word or expression and move on? Is it essential on the part of the translator to be well-acquainted with the text/author of the text which/whom the translator is rendering in a different language? Is it possible at all for a translation to be 100% sincere to the ‘source text’? What are the liberties a translator can take with the ‘source text’ or that a translator should not? What do we call the ‘politics of translation’?

_ These and more queries and doubts keep afflicting the translator ,but what makes him or her pursue the course, notwithstanding all these apprehensions is the fact that by translating a text he or she shares the aesthetic feelings and valuable information inherent or put forth in a text with his/her fellow-beings who would have otherwise denied access to it by reason of language or landscape, so to say.

Thus, I have set forth to render in English select poems from Virutcham Kavidhaikal ( the word ‘select’ is used not in the negative sense as regards the other poems left out, and, with sufficient resources I am sure Azhagiyasinger, the Editor of Navina Virutcham would be too willing to get all the poems in the said Anthology of Virutcham Poems translated into English and publish a wholesome volume!) with a view to do what I can toward securing the rightful place for Tamil Contemporary Poetry in Indian Poetry and also of the World. I have been doing this all these years, but, my translations of Tamil Poems have not so far been published in a book-form. Hence, my whole-hearted thanks to fellow-poet and Editor of the Tamil Literary Magazine ‘Navina Virutcham’, Azhagiyasinger, for permitting and encouraging me to take up this fruitful initiative.

Creative writing and Translation are complementary to each other. Just because translations are on the increase in Tamil it is not correct to say that there are no original works of merit in Tamil. Both are flourishing side by side, we can say. And, both should flourish side by side for any Language, Literature or Society to grow and develop.

Translating a poem can at best be rendering the ‘readerly-text’ that the translator as a discerning reader of the concerned ‘source language text’ receives with the help of his/her intelligence, sensitivity, experience, familiarity with the text or type of text and several other factors. Poems with multi-layered interpretations, explicit as well as hidden meanings, when translated, are bound to give mostly one predominant layer of meaning only. Sad indeed, but, still efforts at translating poems do continue, for, the wish to let the readers of other lands know how rich and fertile, complex and intense our contemporary Tamil Poems are, is also predominant! And so, I have translated these poems. If there be lapses, they are entirely mine. If the poems in translation prove good to read, the credit goes to the poets concerned.

Your Voice

Climbing down the steps and
walking
crossing many a street
going past the bazaar-street
where things lay spread like
the Sea
Even after going beyond
the tall, strong gateway,
some sounds
come to fall in the ears.

Leaving the light of the
outer corridor
where voices of the world
have faded a little
Going into the
semi-darkness of the
inner-corridor
our ancestors’ voices
softly whisper secrets
in our ears.

After entering into the
wholesome darkness of
the sanctum-sanctorium
there comes from within
a dark, colourful silence
outside, upon things
in absolute quietitude
as the very light
when it reflects
At some times
I feel
that you are with me
with hands resting on the
lap, right in front of my
eyes
A song springs from Veena
on its own.

While talking with my friends,
from out of blue
your voice drops a sentence.

Though it seems familiar
yet, wonder and surprise

2) AZHAGIYASINGER

Typewriter

Shouldn’t I write about this
Typewriter
that is stationed in front of me?
In this office, in the cabin
at the fourth floor
in the narrow end of a corner
It would be waiting
not moving anywhere.
In the hurry-burry of the morning
starting from home,
clinging on to the electric train
reaching and falling with a
thud, before this,
the heart would turn terribly restive.
‘Enough to feel it with my hand
It would enquire after my welfare soothingly,
A loving brother in spirit…
Ever encouraging companion…’
-nothing of the sort,
a mere metallic helper
who receives white-sheets
and writes letter after letter
on them.
If the concentration is lost even
for a moment
typing all wrong, it would so
caution you
and mock at the stupid expression
that has come to sprout on
your countenance.
The officer would call inside.
Here, it would share with me
all his ‘hues and cries’.
Can anyone decipher
this typewriter?
Wherefrom it has got the
boon of
reflecting my smile day after day?

The Rain and the Thorn

That all the raindrops on
the leaves
taste sweet-
said the butterfly
to the thorny tree.
‘Sweet?
Well, I shouldn’t leave you’
-thought the chameleon
on a thorn, atop.

The ants on the ground
overheard it.

“The fire in the sacred hole
has brought forth the rain”
-said a voice from the mountain.

Wind came and carried above
as offerings, sweet in leaves.

Tying all available thorns
ants in rows
tried to drag the rain
to ant-hills.

The chameleon in its dream
cooked the butterfly that has
escaped
and ate it to its heart’s content.

When the butterfly came down
once again
to continue its penance
the thorny tree quivered
in ecstasy.

4) ATHMAJI

He who is resting in the shade of the corner-tree

In an effort to learn
wearing the shirt
and proceeding till the end of the street
I think -
‘The final point of Time is my existence’.
It might be true.

Sitting at the street-corner I think
henceforth, am I to return or move ahead ?
In the stone-pillar the evidence of someone.
I see it.
Some poems lie scattered everywhere.
This could be mine.

In whose place do I stand now?
Losing something and gaining something
I have got stuck in the middle.
Unable to set forth in search of my
daily-bread, I am resting here in the shade
of the corner-tree.
This might be permanent.

Entering my hand into the empty pocket
I remain there.
Sighs have become submerged in the air.
My next step lies ahead of me.
Further, what have I learnt…

It would try moving its wings
Seeing a treasure in the mire
In its anguish, oil grease
Loads of weight would make shoulder groan
Rockets would receive daily-wage
Some day eyes would turn misty
Voice would crack and break
Hired mercenaries day in and day out
Money won’t suffice. Ear won’t hear
Eyes wide-opened, the dye would die
The battalion went on spreading

My Poem

Sitting at the window seat
in an Express bus
with eyes closed
in the company of those
sparrows
happily wandering across the Sky,
atop mountains
in the realm of clouds
in the glaciers -
My journey.
“Tell me your poem”,
A voice jerked me.
When I turned,
an empty seat.

Yet,
feeling apprehensive
I started telling my Poem.
in the roaring noise
of the vehicles speeding
right in front of me
my fumbling words
dissolved without a trace

dinozaur..?
if we are to stand so close
its fingernail would hold an umbrella.
the tail and the head would be
somewhere, miles apart.
If we see from its back
its abdomen and organ
would be deep down, in an
abyss.
From ears, the toes would
be faraway, defying our eyes.
How to approach a
Dinosaur…?
by making it approach us.

The wind has never come across
a still tree.
The butterflies that float
to and fro in the air
carry the forest in their feet
and wander.
In the open space
a shepherd
is grazing
the distant clouds
the wagons on the road
and also, some sheep.


9) DEVADEVAN

Metamorphosis

There were three staying in the room.


Scene – 1


With a smile that reveals
the inner peace and content
Buddha sat there.
Toward absolute-Nirvana,
half-naked
Gandhi was rotating the
Spinning-wheel.
With blood dripping
the genius who knew
how to die and come alive
was nailing himself on
the Cross.

From outside, a lament
entered inside.
Was it late by half-a-second?
No sooner it entered
than it ran outside
but, in that split-second
the ‘voice’ had undergone
a metamorphosis
as one filled with tranquility
and sorrow.


Scene – 2


When I entered inside
“won’t you give me a cup of coffee?”
-asked Buddha.
Jesus, as the begging bowl
made of tin,
shook his heart.
Throwing a glance as
that of the listless smile
of an abandoned woman
with famished children
Gandhi went on
spinning the wheel.
Anguished by that misery
my heart, pained, and, the
voice that rose
jumped speedily through the
window, outside.
And, my voice that leapt outside
wandered all over the street
and turned into a
stinking wail.


10) HARIHARAN


I just held on to the place
where I chanced to sit.
I did nothing else.
But, there was hue and cry
all around.

The Present too.
So also the Future.
Time in its totality
was housed inside me.

Some lines I gained.
Some lines slipped from my memory.
I recollected those lines that
remained.
And, the poem was born.

11) INDRAN

The Death of a Sparrow


I have killed
one of the voices of Morning
in the midnight of yesterday.
Using as weapon the bound note
weighing heavy
in which I have scribbled poems
when I hit it
screaming in a human voice
it turned still.
In the darkness,
beating its wings,
scratching me with its thin metallic feet,
scratching the children who were sleeping
under the sheets
when it tried to fly
probing in the dark
I hit it hard.

Today’s Morn
turned restive
losing one of the instruments
in its chorus-song.


12) A.ILAMPARITHI

Hens and baskets

Floods and famine
came and gone the same day
in the relief channel.

On both sides of the road
Pesticide.
The road, which for all these
days
lay there like the shirt of
the ‘boom-boom’ cow-wallah,
where the buses used to
go bumping,
has turned ‘flat and even’ today.

On the last night
pot and plate entered the fray.
‘Whatever be the case
pot is pot’- thought the people
and chose it.
They made the same choice the
next day too.

The hens that hatched eggs
crowed long and calmed down.
Silence prevailed along the
entire stretch of the road
where ‘dhotis’ with borders
are yet to
move and flutter.

Till voting, the luxury of
wagon.
Till hatching, inside the
basket, the hen.

Yet,
seeking relief
the hens would go on laying
eggs,
baskets would keep on coming
to cover them,
as an endless sequence.


13) IRAVATHAM

Rebirth

The world would come to a
close one day-
The next morn
Mother would get up,
as usual,
before everyone else’
light the stove,
boil water,
grind the coffee seeds
with a finesse,
and, balancing the coffee-cups
in her hand
She would endeavour
to make us rise from bed.


14) NA.JAYABASKARAN

Henceforth


My ‘tongue’ has turned
frozen.

My voice so full of
apprehensions
gets dried u so soon.

All my movements with
no lubrication
turn stiff and
cry hoarse.
Amidst the unbearable discordant
note
reasons to live become scarce.

Only the struggle to cross
the waterless Vaigai river-

Henceforth.


15) JAYADEVAN

At that Moment

The moment when
the body weighing heavy
the heart turning weak
Death surfaces
right in front of my eyes-
Words uttered so far
turn meaningless.

The familiar faces too
would become strange.

“In the power of that Great
Grand Force that had been
guiding so far
you would turn frozen.
After that
I will coin many a new word
exclusively for you.
And demonstrations too
I would do for you.

Not to prove different
from the ways of the world,
but, to stay deep-rooted
in the ever vigilant consciousness”
-so said the voice from above.

I turned like a float
that appeared swaying
in the vast expanse of
the Sea.

“Don’t you have faith
even in the waves?”, it said.
“Not just the waves-
a deadly storm might come,
alien lands aplenty
might be revealed”, said I.

‘Let all that befall you”-
said it and disappeared.


16) KA.NA.SUBRAMANIAM


Good Men and Brave Ones

God has eyes : He likes a lot
the good men and the brave ones.
Not leaving the brave ones
to languish for long in War,
nor the good men
in times of Peace,
He would call them back soon.
Indeed God has eyes. Sure.
No lies!


17) KALI-DAS

Distant Relatives


Away from the city
stands my house.
Sharp at 6 in the morning
the milk-man arrives at
my door.
The vegetable vendor, at
7 0’ clock, without fail.
Boarding the bus my wife
takes our children to School.
To reach my office
I change buses twice.
Every now and then
Exhibition, Art-Exhibition
Beach, Cinema –
Everything is there.
The households of our kith and kin are
in the centre of the city.
When we contemplate on going there
the distance looms large.
They too think that
our house stands far away
from the city.


18 ) KALYANJI

In the rectangular table
that which have been read and
written
lie scattered.
I remain deranged.
I arrange
all those that lie scattered,
in neat rows
at the left-hand corner.
I am one who strives for some order.

Disarray with no effort,
And, despite real endeavour
just a semblance of Order
- so the whole surface of the table,
except the left side,
emphasized Dust.
I heed to dusty words.



19) KOLAHALA SRINIVAS

Scenario

In the pool of blood brought forth
with no swirl of the sword
the west would have a dip
everyday.

In the sway of the boat
that proceeds to catch the Sun
the acute sharpness of a
sickle.

As the shine of scattered diamond
the baby-fish would be
flashing here and
there .

As a flower bloomed
on rock, the foam.

In the anguish of the water
that keeps throwing sand and cursing,
the land would experience
suffocation.

In the incessant call of the waves
Eras would be torn.

As the scream of the drum
that bangs the ears-
Life’s Music.

In the high-pitch of the
erect thumb
the Call of Challenge
Everyday.


20) KRISHANGINI

Aflame

The ‘self’ is aflame with the tongues of fire leaping.
Eyes too are on fire.
Breath-burning,
the heart alone stays cool.
With blue and green entwining and blending,
the smell of Yellow, in between.
In front of the Sun, with eyes closed
the feeling that the heart would experience
is too pale a red.
Everywhere the red-cotton would be spread.
The feet would submerge in a half-foot softness.
On both sides creepers, golden-stalk, golden leaves,
with no stairs, nor suffocation of breath
climbing on and on, an ascent sans weariness,
Fragrance numerous, multiplying,
the heart growing peaceful as like

would sound cool, calm and composed
with all the noises subsided.
Inside the closed eyes criss-cross lines,
and their dots
emitting an instant shine here and there
and fading,
going past many a layer and storey

KASHYAPAN

I come and stand outside to give the news.
But the river flows on, roaring in the dark.
The bridge, unending.
The bamboo-fence blocks the passage.
The man who keeps vigil goes on snoring at the
doors of the liquor-shop.
The filth and dirt collected over many a decade
turning monstrous in size,
as a giant container, weighs heavy on our back.
“Let’s keep it down”, you say,
but, the platform of stone by the road-side
is not to be seen.
When I wake the city up to give away the news
which I have brought along, with all my weariness,
journeying for days at a stretch,
the sleepy ones, semi-conscious,
get up and ask me “Oh, why do you trouble me?”
and plunge into the depth of sleep, once again.
Oh, the burden proves unbearable…
I should lose the weight..
If I am not to lose it before dawn,
in the broad day-light what would ‘Those Four’ say….
To leave it, that which I have saved all these days
with love and sweat, in the river,
the oozing darkness is terrifying.
To sell it, there is none to buy.
To donate it, none qualified enough, around.
At day-break the curtain would go up.
And I can reach the town and try something.
Now, in the anguish of the night,
Turning into a ‘donkey of the desert’
I stand in penance, awaiting the Dawn.


22) KALYANARAMAN


Kite

When the boys
gather in our local playground
and fly kite
I would be in a corner
watching.
To make it interesting
the boys would divide themselves
into two groups and play.
With the groups coming into being
the game would turn intense
making me observe, fully focused.
When they fly high the kite,
with the thread changing hands,
The joy that clings on to
the hand that holds the
thread
would fill me with wonder and awe.
Yet, I would murmur to myself
that kite would rise above
but never revolve.

The square

My legs would practice walking,
inside this Square, in bitterness.
This Square is mine.
Unfortunately, its surrounding walls
are common to three.
Running along the street,
standing nude in front of all,
can hug, weep, kick or spit.
My heart’s legs that were
for the sake of earning the daily-bread,
have been attacked by paralyses
beneath the attire.
My ‘inside’ would scream for suicide.

and. in the cow-dung that pours down
plunging, as horns , then, raising,

24) MALAISAMY


The Thief

On the night when the thief’s house turned to rubbles
we realized
that it had fallen on our very sleep.
Thick smoke enveloped the area.
The wind swirled and threw dust and mud from the fields.
In the midnight, terribly unsettled,
with silence and darkness shrouding
we stepped down into the street.

The thief turned out to be our brother.
The thief, ostracized, in rags, dirty,
wandered on, along the roads.
Piercing through our conscience
and sense of righteousness
He went.
From his eyes so artistic and delicate
sarcasm and laughter were seeping forever.
As the shadow of our fear,
obscurity of our guilty feeling, stood he.

In the vast Land he, the gullible thief,
was there in us.
With great care and caution,
in our interaction with Law and the enforcing authorities
on the back of our fear we wrote and hung
Humility, Obedience, Respect, Reverence.

The colour and countenance of the thief were
telecast in the National Channel.
The root -cause of the robbery was announced
in all arrogance.
Further, the term ‘theft’ was dropped on us,
repeatedly.

We realized
that the deed the word denote
was being revealed to us in the reverse.
In a sort of ignorance
the letter and the word lay all over that day

On the night
when the Thief’s house turned to rubbles
we realized that thick smoke enveloped the area.
Also that
the wind made a U turn
and blew from South to North.

The Crow and the Sparrow are but our Kith and Kin’ – An Epic
(excerpts from this long poem)

I have seen;

Crow, sparrow, cock, vulture, pigeon, stork, duck, ‘maina’, ‘garuda’, peacock, woodpecker, kingfisher, ‘akkaakurivi’ – so, many a bird I have seen.

Wherever you go, the troubles with these crows multiply like a festive-flood! The wagon of Lord ‘Saneeswara’; a story about this; that it had pecked at the boob of Seetha Piraati(?). Before sitting down to eat mother would offer it a handful of food well-mixed with ghee and cooked cereals, in all kindness; when I was young I had listened to my elders crying ‘kaa…kaa..kaa…kaaa.’ to appease our dead ancestors; the crow will crow kaa..kaa.. and so eat. A black dot that keeps going round and round in the circle of my mind – kaa..kaa..kaa…

Sparrow – small, little sparrow; fluttering its baby wings, moving as a toddler in small jerky steps on the ground – and suddenly leaping up in a little jump – a small sparrow; having a silky wheat colour – I don’t remember much about it except the words of Bharathi who had declared that ‘the crow and the sparrow are but our kith and kin’.

Cock; white cock with red tuft. That go calling ‘kokkarakkoeoe…; it will lay and hatch eggs( it is not easy to sit so, so still and almost drowning in its own self). Its legs, so full of crumples, its fleshy beard.

There is a word in Tamil – ‘Kozithooval;
‘Vaaranam’ – so an expression.

With a man sitting in a room where the electric-fan keeps rotating, having tied in a red-string with trivial changes and exchanges as like the pigeon-nest, at the doorway corpses-like men stand in rows.

But, in the vast space of the mosque these pigeons, like my darling Suseela ,turn me ecstatic.


Stork (Naarai)


‘Naaraai Naaraai Senkaal Naaraai’,; the old Pisiraanthaiyar verse; we have come a long way from his place; a grey-haired bird ( veteran bandicoot) wearing a collarless shirt would be sitting in penance in the office.

In the river that goes running if a fish were to leap the water-bird would jump and rise.

as coins and notes
with bitterness

crushing and crumpling
my beggar-heart

Have I calmed down this water-bird. It is in that, that in the ‘Siva Naamaavali his name is Samharamoorthy oh, how I revel, Suseela.

Duck, oh duck, aren’t you going to buy ducks? – the egg of the duck is twice the size of the egg of the hen – oh sir, your face tells me that you are suffering from piles.

When I was young, I think it was in Saidapet, these ducks would go in groups, a row dwarf shapes, looking repulsive. Seeing them walking with an ugly gait, oh, Suseela, my goddess of lust, the angel of my heart

if I call ‘mainaa,oh, mainaa”
will the bird ‘maina’ come?

A real ‘maina’ is twice the size of a sparrow; the black of brown; brownish black is its skin; there will be yellow lines glowing round its eyes. If it raises its wings – a magnificent white.

The peacock’s body is bluish-black.; blackish-blue.
Its throat, the length of a snake; when it spreads its ‘tokai’ there are thousands of eyes like vagina. During rainy season if one is to see its dance that would be a real treat to the eyes; then, it would turn the God of the Festival. There is a song ‘mayil aada, kuyil paada’

In the Ashram Street there was a room for us.
It was a very small cabin, hanging suspended

Faces speaking different things in different tones
conversations, sharing of ideas, debates,
cutting into slices, we analyzed Life.

At times the cabin would shift
and assemble in the Gandhi playground
Suburban Road, Bridge-Wall, Kadiresan Mountain
Tea-shop corners, petty-shop corners
wherever, the never-ending conversations,
Dragging along the worries of the World
Our room wandered

Manufacturing innumerable tools( in our heads)
to reconstruct Humanity
we let them fly all over the city.
We relished to our hearts’ content the unconditional freedom
that the walls of our room used to offer Us.

We ate and slept as suited our whims and fancies
Gulped Tea everywhere
That one gave money, this one bought cigarettes,
We smoked almost always
With a trimmed beard and a half-smile
one brought the bottles
All sorts of eatables came in parcels.
In a drunken-state
we comprehended everything all too clearly
In the room’s air we mixed our sighs
and souls too.

As friends multiplied, one on the mat, three on floor,
two in chairs, two on the stairs
one on the newspaper -
So we lay in chaos
and slept so peacefully.

We who, leaving the room, have built Family,
keep struggling, not being able to connect the
Home with the Room.

I saw a spider-
neither on the wall
nor on the floor,
but that which keeps going

as a dark swirl
in the ‘Pooja’ room,
on the silver-plate,
beside the glowing ‘kuthu vilakku’,

right in the middle of its ‘lotus’.
Day in and day out
it remained there
at all those times when the
lamp would be lit,
circambulating.
This Spider would remind me of
Your wonders and miracles,
and of the temple at Kalahasthi.
Today, when I was about to
light the lamp
I saw the spider there, motionless.
I felt You have given
The Great Release’ to the little creature
which lived for a few days,
finding shelter at your feet.
But, why should my heart
keep on thinking of its
feet in motion-
always on the move…?

has come to an end
the spider-web that my heart

Like the new print of an old picture
some days before
a few houses in our place were renovated.
A little earlier to that
Electricity had come to the ‘agraharam’ houses.
As far as I know
the tar-roads were laid long ago.
The white-men introducing the train, and the advent of new,
hitherto unknown ailments
are all yet more ancient tales.
In the nights,
those days
are recollected by our grandmas,
as far as their memory goes.
Sitting with their legs stretched
they say that the very face of our place
is changed.
In between
murmuring the bygone days of still earlier times
there remain in our place
some more houses
safely locked.

WRITER GOPIKRISHNAN'S SHORT-STORIES IN ENGLISH

(1945 - May 10, 2003)

Despite his mother tongue being Sourashtra Mr.Gopikrishnan had been writing in Tamil, mostly in small i.e., literary magazines till his untimely death on the 10th of May, 2003. 

A post-graduate in the faculty of Psychology and also Social-Work he had worked in various Social-Welfare Organizations. He was well-versed in the field of anti-Psychiatry also. He had penned quite a number of important works in Tamil and his short-story collections- Mudiyadha Saman(The Impossible Equation-1999, Thooyoen(the Puritan-2000), Maanida Vaazhvu Tharum Aanandham(The Happiness that Human Life Offers) -2002, Ovvadha Unarvugal-(Feelings Unbecoming)1986 (which is a book of short-novels) and a novel titled 'Ullaeyirundhu Sila Kuralgal(Some voices from within-1983 and a small hand-book on the salient features of social work called 'Samoogappani, A-Samoogappani, Edhir-Samoogappani (Which was recently rendered in English by me under the title Social-Work, A-Social Work, Anti-Social-Work) a book on the problems of the Mentally-Ill captioned 'Konjam Avargalaip Patri’ (A Little About Them) and his last short-work a volume of short-stories called 'Idaaginip Paeigalum, Nadaippinangalum, Udhiri Idaith Tharagargalum and quite a number of articles on various social issues bear testimony to his sincerity and significance both as a human-being and a writer. 

He had also contributed significantly in the field of translation . He had also taken an active part in the making of CRE-A's (an esteemed publishing concern in the city of Chennai) Tamil-to-English Dictionary.Having worked in various Social-Welfare Organizations, Mr.Gopikrishnan's writings deal with the chaotic conditions in the field of Social-Work and also in Psychiatry. 

The author had deep compassion for the have-nots and the down-trodden and also those labeled Mentally Ill and this comes forth tellingly in all his works. His stories are significant for the way they present the unpredictablities and the monotony of life and also its injustices and disparities in a lighthearted vein, at the same time poignant, vein. The element of humour with its under-current of pathos and righteous indignation is the hall-mark of his works. His life-style was also such, simple with bare-minimum needs. He never compromised on his principles to make living easy. 

An unassuming person who suffered from depression but who had the mental strength to transform it as the driving force of his creativity he was never a self-promoter. Hence, as long as he lived his writings never helped him to meet his daily needs. No laurels came his way. Nevertheless, his short-stories are avidly read by discerning readers.Some of his short-stories are rendered in English by me.

“ So, after giving away ninety rupees by way of rent your children and yourself manage the whole month with the balance, i.e ten rupees. Am I right? ”

IN A SYMPOSIUM

A short-story in Tamil titled 
‘Karutharangil Kanakkil Kollappatavaigal,

Just two days earlier only, an invitation – card and a letter had come to the Director of the project in which Samikannu was working. It was an invitation for a Symposium. How the Society should view and treat those labelled Mentally ill’ was the subject-matter. The letter was with the request that Samikannu should participate in the Symposium. The Director had no alternative. As not sending Samikannu as their representative would cause friction between their two service organizations. So, the director allowed Samikannu to go.

Samikannu was a great master in the game. The social-workers of those seven or eight social – service organizations in the city were his close friends. For any seminar, symposium, debate and things like that they would send invitation to Samikannu’s project-director and alongwith the invitation they would always send a letter asking for the participation of Samikannu in the said programme and so would keep reviving their friendship. This arrangement suited Samikannu very much.The reason was very simple. Samikannu liked those dishes, biriyani etc., that are usually offered in the seminars. He liked them all very much. Mostly they would be qualitatively rich and very tasty. He would eat them all to his heart’s content. In some seminars Payasam, Ice-cream, Beeda and all other items of a grand feast would be made available. In these seven or eight years since his joining the band of professional social- workers Samikannu had attended a lot of such seminars. Because of this the Director is a bit jealous of him. Further, these seminars offered a strange pleasure of viewing a social-service vanityfair for one whole day without having to lose a day’s leave.

Samikannu had read a lot of books on Psychiatry and Anti–Psychiatry. He had reached a stage where he felt, kind of, overloaded with the stuff. At one point he even became tired of it all. Moreover, for four and a half years he was working as a part–time social- worker in a private psychiatric clinic. In all those days he had been a sincere and straight forward social-worker and this had given him so much peace and content. It is in this background that Samikannu had won the invitation for the symposium.

‘New Life’ was the organization. Those patients labelled ‘mentally ill’ who were put back on the path of recovery, before making a re-entry into their families, stayed there for several months and learnt to mould their personalities in accordance with the requirements and expectations of their families and society. Thus, New Life trained them to succeed in their new life. It was the venue situated in a lonely corner along the hundred–feet road in Vadapalani.The symposium was taking place that day. Samikannu glanced through the Programme card. The programme was to start at 10.30 a.m. Samikannu avoided a lot of unnecessary things such as the Prayer song, Welcome address, Introducing the speakers, etc. Then, it would be enough if the venue was reached by 11.15 a.m. Only then the speech of the Psychiatrist would begin. By 11 a.m. Samikannu set out, locking his room.

By the time he reached ‘New Life’ it was 11.20. Leaving his moped in a corner of the venue, he went into the symposium – hall.The Psychiatrist, a female, was speaking. The various types of mental illness, their symptoms, treatment – so, she was piling heaps of information and details. Samikannu knew them all by heart. Nothing was new to him. There was just one thing that was worthy of his attention. The speech was in pure, decent, spoken Tamil. But, instead of saying ‘Jana Nerisal’ (over crowding of people) she used the term ‘Jana Nerukkadi’ (Crisis of People) which he found unpalatable. Ok, just one mistake. So, Samikannu condoned it.There was a small intermission. Many biscuits and coffee were distributed. Samikannu firmly rejected the offer of Mary. He never liked Mary biscuit. A kind of hatred he had for it, so to say.

Samikannu was averse only to Mary biscuits but he liked Mary, she who was working in his section, very much. She would always talk to him affectionately. Samikannu would also be eagerly awaiting those opportunities when he could have a chit chat with her. He would talk to her with all love. The sweet–nothings, in a manner of speaking, would prove a great morale booster.It is indeed important for the readers to know what Samikannu has to say regarding such harmless womanizing. This would provide several helpful tips for the young and the middle age. So, I appeal to the editor whoever is going to publish this story not to delete this paragraph and the next one. If this appeal goes unheeded and the paragraphs deleted, Samikannu who is so steeped in sorrows and sufferings and yet keep going with the help of his sense of humour alone would suffer all the more on account of it.

O.K, now, let’s analyse that which is called ‘ Jollu ’. Jollu is a thick, colourless liquid. It would have a sweet taste. A gland situated near the heart procreates this liquid coming from the vein through a thin tube-like vessel upto the mouth it would create a kind of jelly – like moisture in the mouth. When that moisture spreads inside the mouth, the mouth would utter all sweet nothings. From the right corner of the lips the liquid would seep and turn the cheek, throat, etc., all wet. True, the shirt would be dried up with the help of the fan, but still, it would be always better to wash it with water and brushing it and then hang it under the sun for drying up. Otherwise, lots of ants would crowd it for tasting the sweetness of the overflown saliva.

As mentioned earlier, Samikannu had great liking for Mary. So also, he liked ‘mouth -watering’(Jollu) a lot. At times the thought that in disliking Mary biscuit so intensely he was betraying his beloved Mary, would trouble his mind. Yet, however much he tried, he couldn’t bring himself to liking the taste of Mary biscuit. That which he liked very much was ‘Good Day ’ biscuits which would not be distributed in the Seminars. And, because of this prejudice Samikannu had to go through the proceedings of seminars without the help of the catalyst called biscuits.Drinking coffee Samikannu felt an urge to go, ease himself. It was said that the toilets were in a remote place at the right – hand corner of the ground.Samikannu walked hurriedly and reached that spot. There was a lavatory at the left - hand side and a bathroom and a loo at the right - hand side.Samikannu got into the loo at the left hand side and attended the nature’s call ’. There was a tap and a square tin vessel.

 Filling the tin – vessel with water and pouring it down into the loo-hole, so cleaning it, he then washed his hands with water and wiped them in his handkerchief, and then, after closing the door of the toilet, came back to sit in his chair.A servant was collecting those empty coffee – cups and arranging them in a large tray. In the small vacant space near the mike the psychiatrist was standing and a small crowd had gathered round her. Two elderly men and three ladies were in that crowd. Some of their relatives could be the immates of New Life, thought Samikannu.

Samikannu felt that he had several things to share with the psychiatrist; that, the mental illness which the psychiatrist mentioned was there in Agatha Christie and that Mohammed Basheer wrote his much–acclaimed work ‘Fathima’s Sheep’ when he was undergoing treatment in a Mental Health Institute – Samikannu wanted to ask the psychiatrist whether she knew these things, and ,whether she knew them or not ,he wanted to talk to her about those things for which he felt the need to talk to her for a few minutes. Waiting for his chance he stood there among the small crowd with his pen and shoulder bag. Four or five times he opened his mouth to launch the conversation ,but, failed. An elderly person in dhoti was having the psychiatrist all to himself.

When it looked that Samikannu’s chance had atlast come he was denied permission.For, the next speaker was about to begin her discourse. A lady wearing glasses came and informed him that the psychiatrist would be there till 4 p.m and requested him to have his talk with the psychiatrist later on. Samikannu felt highly insulted. The doctor also said that he would be there till four o’ clock. With a terrible feeling of discomfort inside, Samikannu went to sit in his chair at the last row. 

The next speaker had a doctorate to her credit. She gave a speech on the theme ‘ Tension and Mental Illness ’. Her speech elaborated on how a particular gland in the body caused tension within and so lead to mental illness. The speech was in English. It was not so profound and all. That she had obtained her Doctorate from America and that she was a regular contributor of analytical essays and articles on psychiatry in a reputed magazine on Mental Health – so the lady who introduced the speaker, the same one who had blocked his way to the psychiatrist, highlighted the speaker’s credentials. Somehow her speech failed to impress Samikannu. Her speech was of the bookish type as that of one who after reading a science lesson in S.S.L.C telling the lesson in her mother tongue. Just that much and no more.There arose in Samikannu very many serious doubts regarding the quality of her analytical writings. She was a Neuro Psychologist. She belonged to that private hospital which was indulging in mass-scale day-light robbery, the biggest of its kind in the city, and so turn the patients and their kith and kin all-time paupers. For about half-an-hour she suffocated him with her speech.

Next came a social-worker of a private psychiatric clinic. His discourse centered on how the clients should adjust with their illness and keep going with it. The social-worker was tall and slim like the willow. Youngster. Enterprizing. But, his Tamil proved the veritable villain. He called English to his aid. Unable to grasp the Tamil equivalent for ‘Attitude ’ he fumbled a lot. Samikannu felt like getting up and lending help to him. At one point the speaker called ‘Mental Illness’ a misfortune. Samikannu couldn’t agree with it. ‘ Mental Illness is a different State of Mind. That’s all. It is no misfortune nor ill–fate. In fact, if one has the tact to use those symptoms of psychological imbalance to his benefit it can well turn out to be a boon to him ’.

As if to add salt to such foolish insights a white screen was tied widespread at the back of the dais. There appeared short–clippings and notes about the illness in various colours, with the help of slides, on the screen. The speech stopped midway. The clippings were in Tamil, comprehensible for all those who knew Tamil.

Yet, as an aged fool requested that they be explained, the environment turned polluted. A social-worker of average height who belonged to that same organization came forward to offer explanations. With hip-belt and modern footwear he looked handsome. True, he couldn’t be called outstandingly handsome but still one could classify him as handsome. Handsome enough to make any college girl fall flat. The exclusive attraction of youth was bubbling all over his face. And, he was taking extra–care not to let that bubble drop down and turn into nothing.His explanations revealed him as a thorough scoundrel. Tamil proved to be his bitter enemy. Even the pronunciation of those English words which were ill-mixed in his speech sounded terrible. It could be that he had come from a different State. The youngster’s speech which had preceded this one’s eloquence was far better.

The slide-screening and speech-giving rituals went on in all ugliness and at last came to a close.

Amidst all this din and noise Samikannu managed to prepare a list of the names of all those books in Tamil that had so far been written on Mental Illness. He wrote down the list of the titles of these books in a half sheet. He felt duty–bound to hand over the list to the psychiatrist. Further, of the many speakers that female alone seemed to have a fairly sound grasp of the language of Tamil. Also, that female happened to be the chief–guest of the function.

The next speaker was a female. She too was a social-worker. She spoke on the theme, ‘ The Role of Family in the Rehabilitation of the Mentally Ill ’. She called herself as one doing social service. Those who had acquired an M.A. in the faculty of social–work should not call themselves as doing social – service. They should only say that they were doing social work. But, she was not aware of the term ‘Professional Social – Worker’.That woman was giving a speech in the manner of an upcoming politician. Time and again she kept adopting the verbiage of the political meetings. And, she also joked a lot.

She kept on pronuncing the Tamil term ‘Mana Noi ’ ( Mental Illness ) as ‘Manna Noi ’ (which means illness pertaining to marriage). Samikannu thought that she was mentioning about husbands who went to bed with women other than their wives, without taking any precaution and then pass on the venereal disease that they had earned through their adultery, to their legally wedded wives.

Again she mispronounced the word ‘Mana Nalam’ (the well-being of the mind and heart) as ‘Manna Nalam’(the well-being of the marital bondage). And so, when she said ‘Manna Nalam Penudhal ’ instead of ‘ Mana Nalam Penudhal’ Samikannu pledged to himself that he would treat his wife with all fairness and so would look after the well–being (penudhal) of their marriage.

Next she said ‘Manna Thidam’ instead of ‘Mana Thidam’(meaning the grit and determination of the mind and heart ) and Samikannu assumed that she was referring to the way the husband and wife keep going having the grit and determination to tolerate each other.

In the end she said in her usual mispronunciation ‘Mana Nala Maruthuvar ’ (Maruthuvar means Doctor). This created some confusion in Samikannu’s power of comprehension. There could be marriage counselors‘( Manna Nala Aalochagar )’, who would set right any crack in the husband–wife relationship with the help of fevicol and what not. He had heard of them. But, he couldn’t solve the mystery as to why a doctor was needed to make a marriage work against all odds. ‘ But, if one with M.A in Social-Work said so there should be some specific and especial reason for it, and that it was beyond his dull-head to see the significance ’, thought Samikaannu.

At three places she cited some verses as examples. But they were completely out of place.

As she finished her auspicious discourse on ‘Mannam’, i.e, Marriage, there came the announcement of the lunch interval. It was Samikannu’s much–awaited psychological moment.

As he felt the urgent need to urinate he almost ran towards the toilet. The door of the lavatory at the left side was closed. The sound of the water pouring into the mug could be heard. Samikannu went inside the right–hand side Loo and relieved himself and then walked in the direction of the dinning hall.

Small hall only. It was houseful. And, outside the hall some ten to fifteen students were waiting for their turn. Salvar-Khameez, Shawl, Churidhaars, Jeans, Kurthaas – so on and so forth. Samikannu was left alone. Moving away from that spot he came to stand on the sand by the side of the hall, and, raising his eyes and head above, kept gazing at the sky. The sky looked a little cloudy. He stood contemplating seriously about the miserable state of affairs in the field of Social-Work.After a while once again he went near the dining-hall. Those female students who were standing outside the hall earlier couldn’t be seen. The hall was full. It could be that those students were having their lunch, nay, feast.

 ‘If so, where is room for me? ’ Indeed, not available. After all of them had their belly full he should eat sitting all alone. ‘ That would look terrible. But, no other go ’. Worried, he came near the sand and stood there.When he advanced near the hall once again, those female students were entering inside for place in the next round of lunch service.Samikannu turned alive. At that juncture it was all–important for him to be alive and kicking. For, only then he could take a plunge into the conference – feast.Samikannu was standing there, hesitant and lost.

 An elderly person invited him inside. Showing a row he told Samikannu first in English and then in Tamil, “You can go inside”. ‘What a wonderful translator! ’ _ so Samikannu applauded him with all his heart and felt supremely happy.

The food was splendidly delicious. Vegetarian only. It didn’t matter. As if in each and everyone of the symposiums in and around the city they served biriyani !. He asked for a second cup full of ‘kootu’ and side-dish and fed himself in gay abandon. When he was having curd–rice a plastic cup full of ‘payasam’ was placed on one corner of his plantain – leaf. They had applied orange- dye to the payasam. As the young girl who served asked him whether he would like to have another cup he nodded his head greedily. He drank the second cup also with great passion. After drinking water and washing his hand Samikannu’s life must have attained salvation. But nothing of that sort took place. Samikannu had no faith in rebirth and salvation. That ‘beeda’ was not offered turned out to be the worst possible worries of the day for Samikannu.

In the afternoon session there was just group discussion. Only a few had gathered in the seminar -hall. In the row straight in front of Samikannu there sat a middle-aged woman and an old lady in the right side and an old man next to her.One end of the woman’s sari was stuck in one corner of the steel chair. As the old woman pointed it out the middle-aged woman pulled the sari portion and the portion tore off. As the woman kept on pulling it harshly, the tear went on widening. Unable to bear it any longer Samikannu told her that by folding the chair the stuck portion of the saree could be freed without further damage. The woman heeded to his advice and so saved the sari. She thanked him. He kept it inside his pocket with great care.

The aged woman was now telling something to her old man in a feeble voice. Hurriedly the old man turned to the back of the chair. There a grey–coloured insect was trying to climb on the rear side leg of the chair. Removing his right–leg slipper the old man hit the insect hard and killed it. Samikannu felt like kicking the old man. Going through the chart that laid down six conditions which one should adhere to in order to keep one’s mind healthy the old man was noting them down calmly in a paper. Of the conditions at least three could be followed only in the Western countries.

The crowd started coming in. At last Samikannu succeeded in his effort to attract the attention of the psychiatrist. “For a long time you have been trying to have a word with me, isn’t it so? ” asked the lady. “Nothing. Just to give these to you ”, - So saying, Samikannu gave her the folded half–sheet wherein he had listed out the names of those Tamil books, Glancing at it disinterestedly, “ I’ll read them if time permits ”, said she. Samikannu felt as it someone was causing his death with just one hard blow. Indeed the blow left him breathless. Such great books…!.

A very old person was standing next to him. He asked what books they were when he came back to sit in his chair. Sitting next to him he asked him once again about the books, eagerly. His enquiry brought back some of Samikannu’s heart beats. “If you have a piece of paper, please give it ”. I’ll give the names of those”. The very old person gave his invitation card. Samikannu could write just the name of the bookshop on the available space. ‘At the shop one could get detailed information regarding those books’ said he. The fact that there were literary works available on Mental Illness surprised the old person greatly. Seeing the man’s eagerness and enthusiasm Samikannu became elated and made him sit on his lap with great care and affection. But, as he proved too heavy to bear, Samikannu placed him carefully in the adjacent chair as before.

There was a lady wearing nose–ring, in the crowd. If only Samikannu had sufficient money and suitable beloved, he would have bought such a nose – ring and presented it to his ladylove.

The crowd divided itself into three groups for the purpose of discussion. Samikannu felt greatly disappointed at not being included in the group in which the lady with the nose–ring was.In Samikannu’s group the old person eager to know about those important books, another person older than him, a bespectacled man and a lady in her forties were there. The relatives of all the three were staying in New Life. The social-worker who called ‘Mental Illness ’as ‘marital illness’ was also in their group. Her hair looked dishevelled. Samikannu whole–heartedly offered his comb, taking it out from the rearside pocket of his pants, and, with its help she combed her hair with great care. Samikannu kept his imaginary comb back in it right place safely.

They all seated themselves in a circle. Each one introduced himself / herself. Agatha came next to Samikannu and Josephine came next and Joseph, next to next. The Last two were students of Social-Work Degree Course.First, the tall one began to speak of his problem. That his sister was down with psychological set–back and that she was staying in New Life and for her stay he had to shell out a full thousand rupees every month – revealed he in a tone of regret. Agatha looked active and highly energetic in salwar–khameez and blue–colour shawl. “You are the one to pay for your sister’s well-being. Why do you regret it? ” said she directly. That was enough for Samikannu to develop an instant liking for her. For, the argument that she had put forth was indeed very valid.

“Can you afford to leave your sister in the lurch?” - asked Samikannu hotly. Taken aback, the tall man fumbled. Saying that it was not so, he explained that his family meant his wife, two sons and himself. ‘If he allowed a slight change in his description of family he could easily include his sister also in it and it wouldn’t pose any problem’, felt Samikannu and voiced out his viewpoint. That Agatha too joined him provided him great comfort.Joseph gave all sort of stupid and wrong advices and so tried to drag Agatha to his side but failed miserably in his efforts. With thorough glee Samikannu was progressing forward.

Mentioning the name of a religious head the auspicious social-worker was suggesting whether they could go seek some help form that person.

Samikannu turned this situation to his benefit. Segregating Agatha from others, he asked her, “ Do you believe in this thing called religion?”. Before she could open her mouth to say something, “Do you know that this religious head is a womanizer of the worst order?”, asked he further, springing a surprise on her. As Joseph waved his hand to say something Agatha cut him short and ignored him.Though initially it proved difficult for Agatha to share herself between young Joseph and ‘thirtyfive plus’ Samikannu, in the end she leaned towards Samikannu only. And Samikannu gathered her who had come to lean on him and laid her on his broad chest. And, he fondly caressed her soft hair smelling sweet with Roja Shampoo fragrance.

Agatha was completely bowled over by Samikannu’s wisdom and intelligence. Logical joke exclusively for her eyes, she was all – laughter.Thenceforth, till the close of the symposium Agatha belonged to Samikannu. Joseph had suffered a severe defeat.Samikannu made a crack in the ceiling of the seminar hall and hoisted his blue flag of victory on the roof-top. Those who had gone along the hundred feet road near Vadapalani area at about 4.20.p.m on 03.01.97 would have seen it. They would have praised the glory of its majestic beauty.Samikannu felt a great pride in his achievement, greater than that felt by Edmund Hillary and Tensing on becoming the first men to set foot on Mount Everest. Getting down from the roof in a semi–drunken state, he once again joined the group-discussion.

Samikannu and Agatha as partners in a joint venture succeeded in tearing the tall man to pieces. The tall man said miserably that his wife had once said hysterically, “If you are too particular about having your sister with you, then go get a separate house for both of you and keep her with you. I can’t have her here and lose my life. Go with her if you like. If you choose to go I’ll be losing my ‘mangalsuthra’ only ”.“ Is mangalsuthra that very essential for your wife in this advanced age? ”. Despite his self–control Samikannu couldn’t help asking. The query unnerved the tall man. He got up and shouted something. Then, sat again.In the end the auspicious social-worker came out with a vague suggestion that if needed, the social worker Joseph, as part of his field–work could go to the tall man’s house and talk at length on the issue at hand and Joseph noted down the address in a piece of paper, feeling acutely indifferent.

Then came the turn of the elderly one who had shown interest in books. He introduced himself as an S.S.L.C of the ancient times and pointed out that it was equivalent to the present day B.A., Samikannu took on the role of a morale booster and held him sky – high saying that his achievement was not that little but that his old S.S.L.C was more than equal to the present day Ph.D. The old man expressed his profound gratitude turning humility-personified. He uttered the word ‘handicraft’ whenever he had to say ‘handicapped’. He didn’t have much problems to elaborate. The old man was a retired Railway officer.

None could hear what the lady said. Joseph and the auspicious female said something to that lady.

Josephine didn’t say a word till the end. Being mum is a safe escape route, so to say.

Looking at the auspicious social-worker Joseph said “ Your speech was very profound madam ”. “Ice, ice! ”, said Agatha. Alongwith the routine seasonal chillness and the cool breeze being spread by the ceiling fan, one could feel an added degree of chillness that had come to be, all too suddenly, in the environment. Samikannu fixed the topmost button of his shirt too and covered himself tightly.

The group-discussion had at last come to an end. The crowd began to disperse.

Somehow the ‘vote of thanks’ was not given. It could be that none conducted himself / herself in a manner that would earn them the vote of thanks.Holding a gift – parcel the psychiatrist was walking towards the exit.Conversing, Agatha and Samikannu came down the stairs. Samikannu went on telling her several jokes on social-work and Agatha was laughing uncontrollably, relishing them all. Samikannu kept holding her in a firm, fond grip, by way of preventing her from falling down from too much of jerky laughter. Both of them parted ways near Samikannu’s moped. On Agartha’s request Samikannu gave her the name and address of his social-service organization and also the telephone number. Telling that she would definitely come and meet him after speaking to him over the phone and informing him of the time of her arrival, Agatha took leave of him.’

Samikannu climbed on to the roof-top of the Seminar – Hall and untied his victory flag, and, folding it, kept it safely inside his shoulder – bag.Samikannu felt excited to the core. At the peak of his ecstasy he felt the urgent need to urinate.

He walked in the direction of the loo. The door of the left hand side toilet remained opened. Samikannu who almost set his first step into the cabin, withdrew it backwards. That turned out to be a living room. A middle–aged poor lady was sitting on the floor wearing a dirty cotton saree. Next to her sat two small girls eating something from the plates placed in front of them.In the right –hand corner there stood a kerosene stove, lighted. By the side of the stove the folded half–sheet containing the list of names of those literary works, given by Samikannu to the psychiatrist, was lying, lost and orphaned. Samikannu relieved himself in the right–hand side loo. His moped which would usually start only after several sound kicks turned sensitive and alive at the first kick itself.Samikannu had taken a room for rent in a house in a narrow lane opposite the Brittania Company. A kitchen and a living room.

Near Thirumangalam his moped’s smooth run was disturbed by the traffic signal. Close by,‘Joseph and Brother’Funeral Van was proceeding to bring the dead body of someone. As soon as the Red changed to Green Samikannu’s moped resumed its run. ‘Joseph and Brother ’ was ahead of him, running at a great speed.

By about 5.30.p.m. Samikannu reached his dwelling site. Bringing his moped inside through the passage, he made it stand near his room.In the living room there were two huge almirahs with five rows each, on the wall itself.

The right hand side almirah was brimming with books. In the left-hand side rows and in the third-row there were some flags. Taking the victory flag from the shoulder –bag and pressing it smoothly and so removing its wrinkles Samikannu folded it neatly and placed it on top of those flags.In the last row there was a big tin – box. Opening the lid, Samikannu carefully took out the ‘thanks’ from his shirt–pocket and placed it inside. As the box was already full, some two or three thanks fell down and scattered on the floor. Samikannu collected those too and placed them inside the box and then closed the lid tightly. ‘Should buy a new tin-box’, thought he.Without even transferring himself into a lungi he spread the mat and came to sit on it and contemplate. He asked himself whether he had learnt anything new and hitherto unknown useful information in the symposium. The answer was immediate; a firm ‘No’. Feeling terribly exhausted he laid himself on the mat.Ten minutes went by. The sound of some one knocking at the door could be heard. Two nuns wearing long black gowns entered in. Their faces looked familiar as those seen in the symposium. They gestured Samikannu to come outside. He went with them.

A stretcher which would be commonly used in a hospital was laid down on the passage. The nuns asked him to lie flat on it. Inhaling the air for the last time, Samikannu stretched himself on it comfortably.Near the entrance there was a white coffin and also the ‘Joseph and Brother’ Funeral Van in the street. The nuns dismounted Samikannu’s corpse into the box. The backside door of the van opened. Two aged ladies in dirty attires came out. Their faces looked familiar as seen in another symposium. They closed the coffin and nailed it on all sides.The nuns and the old women together carried the coffin and placed it inside the van. One of the nuns kept a red rose on the box, above the head. The van started. The old women sat near the coffin, by its side. The stench of rotten ‘Marie’ biscuits was all spread within.The van which moved on slowly came to a halt near the Arpudhanathar Church. In the church a ‘Father’ stood near the coffin and offered prayers.Those female students who attended the symposium carried the coffin in their hands. Before they could reach the entrance of the burial-ground the sun had disappeared completely ,and, all around it had turned quite dark.

The nuns and the old women disappeared. The stench of the biscuit too had gone away without a trace.

Going past many a tomb bearing the Cross, the coffin was carried a long way in a procession. At last the grave, dug for Samikannu, came into sight. The coffin was slowly dismounted into the pit.Joseph and Agatha heaped sands on it with the help of a shovel and closed the grave-pit. Four female students jointly brought a heavy Cross and placed it there in an erected position. Faraway, a Father’s outline was seen thinly. Across the Cross a small note was inscribed. It read thus :

( Translation of Gopi Krishnan’s short – story in Tamil Captioned, ‘ Eppadiyoe Ellaam Marma maaga Irundhaal Sari ’ (எப்படியோ எல்லாம் மர்மமாக இருந்தால் சரி) Which was published in Dhinamani Kadhir, the Sunday Supplement of Thinamani, a leading daily in Tamil and included in his short – story collection ‘ Mudiyaadha Saman’ - முடியாத சமன்)

Translated into English by-LathaRamakrishnan‘ Jal…jal…jal…’. Now the compound door began to moan in a low voice. The dog’s moan is given very many an interpretation. That the dogs would moan on being confronted by a ghost is one of those. Further, the dog’s moan would evoke intense sadness in one’s heart. A scene depicting one’s last day on earth with all the losses, sorrows, pains an sufferings of the day would be flashed across the screen deep inside. Then, the jal…jal…jal… would be a female ghost. My body was all drenched in sweat. The tongue had gone dry. I felt as if I couldn’t talk. Above all, my sense had turned all the more sharp. My eyes were eagerly looking for a woman in a white saree to appear at the window. After a short while the electricity was resumed. For almost half-an-hour nothing happened. Feeling acutely uncomfortable I was twisting and turning in my mat, groaning.

While coming back all alone after viewing a late night show, if we happen to hear any young woman’s voice full of thirst and longing, or, the jingling sound of anklets, or, if there spreads the smell of jasmine from out of blue, we should tread with great caution; should keep our eyes tightly closed. Keeping the direction in mind we should walk ahead hurriedly. We should not cast a backward glance on any account. Especially men, that too, young men should be doubly careful. Mohini is a very vicious ghost.

Once a boy in his teens was returning from a late night show, all alone through the open fields. He was coming in his cycle. Hearing the sweet, inviting voice of a girl from behind, he looked back. A very beautiful girl. Young and voluptuous. Her head was loaded with jasmine. She requested for a lift in his cycle and he all too gladly allowed her to sit in front of him and started pedaling happily. In the close proximity of the two bodies the sensuous feelings were steadily rising and she herself showed the green signal, saying, “ let’s sit here and have a heart-to-heart talk ”. Rightly reading between the lines he took her to a bushy spot between two heaps of straw. On completion of the much-awaited thing her right hand extended upward. And, it kept on extending, upward, upward, upward. And, the boy’s talk ended right there.

The sound of someone on the terrace, much in the military fashion could be heard all too clearly. sarrack… sarrack… sarrack… Steady steps; strong, firm sound of shoes. It started exactly above the center of my head. Moving to the right, it slowly died. And, from the side where it had died down it resumed and came to stop exactly at the same spot above the center of my head. Fear gripped me ‘ Jadamundi ’.

I lay there paralyzed. Then, forcing me to be a little brave, I glanced sideways through the window. The same huge building stood on the other side. In its third floor light could be seen through four rooms. The doors of the windows remained closed. Barely a minute. Suddenly all the lights went off at exactly the same moment. The building was submerged in the deluge of darkness. ‘ The Mysterious Mansion’ - as something within said so I at once moved away from the spot where I was standing and laid me down on the mat hurriedly. Some noise could be heard from the ‘Murungai’ tree. An owl’s cry rose eerily from nowhere.

Suddenly the smell of jasmine assaulted the nostrils. But, there was absolutely no jal…jal…jal…jal… That means, the ghost or, rather, ghostess Mohini must be approaching stealthily, under the garb of invisibility. What for the Mohini is craving after a much worn-out man….. I felt terror-struck.My wife was wearing the flowers of Mohini. Placing the pillow a little away I placed myself out of her reach and lay down, feeling jittery. Some blockade in the throat. A strange kind of cough burst out of me in an unusual manner. At the same time a dog gave out a brief bark. That sound was similar to a cough of sort. Man – dog, dog – man, dog – I !.

I had prepared strong black coffee and was drinking it. That tasted tea. The shiver of fear had come to be wide spread within.Taking out a book I started reading it. Two new types of ‘Chathaan’ (devil), hitherto unmentioned, were talked of in the book. ‘Izhuthadi Chathaan’, ‘Sambari Chathaan’. The ‘Chathaans’ had appeared in apt places. I re - read it, focussing my attention.

One sentence meant ‘He should be made to run from pillar to post_ ‘Izhuthadichathaan’ and so taught a lesson, and , the other said, ‘ If only we earn a little_ Sambarichathaan _ we can hope to survive. Unable to concentrate on the book I sought refuge on the mat once again. I was shaking my wife. My hands were shaking my kid. I was sitting on the mat, half asleep. In front of me there was a plate full of glass – pieces, evenly powdered. My child took a little from it and tried to put it into her mouth. I rose up, extremely agitated and knocked it off from her grasp. Thank God, a terrible accident was averted. Taken aback, my child was looking bewildered and as my wife came out of the kitchen she started complaining, “ See Mummy, I was eating sugar and Daddy had knocked it off ”.On my way to office, once again the smell of jasmine came to fill my nostrils. As far as I could see there was no woman in that lane, nor any jasmine flower vendor.

“ Hello Sir, remember me? ” - A familiar face.

“ Hello, aren’t you Chandru? When did you come from Thiruvarur?"“ What sir, you’ve forgotten me so soon. I’m typewriter mechanic shop Gopi"

‘ How come Chandru and Gopi turned to be one and the same…? ‘.- Going inside the office, before I could start my work, my colleague Ramanathan came near my table. “What’s this, looking so pale, as if hit hard by a ghost? Any bad dream? ” asked he.

“ Bad dream or bad reality – nothing is known at all. Dammit ”.I was waiting at the bus–stand to board the bus that would take me to Thiruvanmiyur. Turning to the right every how and then, I was looking for the bus. In between the housing – board buildings the evening sun could be seen. A wonderful orange circle. In a few seconds there appeared three suns. I removed the spectacles and looked. There appeared only one sun.

I wore the glasses. Now, once again I could see three suns. Without removing the glasses I kept on looking. One bus only; not three buses. A woman was going on foot. Not three women.

I visited the Association for a change. The secretary was present. “If I am to die, now, none would know anything ”, said he. “Does that mean your death is going to be a mysterious death?”, asked I, highly agitated. That made him look angry and then, confused. After a few seconds, “All the matters and all income-expenditure particulars of our Association are registered in my mind only. My mind is an ‘Association Diary’. Suppose I depart all on a sudden one day, these fellows would go mad, not knowing the accounts”, explained he. “Sorry I took your words in a different way ”, I said weakly. “No one understands me properly” he regretted.

“Man can have any type of death. But not a mysterious one. That’s why I became a little unsettled, ” said I. The secretary’s countenance had turned gloomy.

A Hindi play was being telecast on the small screen. In a fort a king was chasing a girl with the intention of raping her. The chase was proceeding on the topmost portion of the fort. The girl jumps down and dies. Then, the jingling sound of the anklets. Some noise through the dry leaves, as that of foot-steps.With the hairs standing erect and the body turning icy–cold I switched off the television–set. In the ears within, the ‘jal.. jal..’ sound rang one more time and turned silent.

I went to see friend Chandrakant ,the Editor-cum-Publisher of a magazine, in order to know what he thought of my review or the reader’s viewpoints, about a book.

“The book is very good. I like it very much. But, your review alone is all trash. How is that? ”asked he. Feeling so low, “I will think over and then write a letter to you ”, said I.

When I returned home, there was a magazine, which must’ve come by post, on my table. I had sent two poems to that magazine. That which I considered a very good piece of work was rejected and the ‘not-so-good’ one was published.

After two days, a letter that had my name and address written in my hand came to me. In the space meant for the addressee’s name and address mine was written and in the sender’s space, that of Chandrakanth. 

Mystery is no more a mystery to me.

I don’t know what you think of ‘Hair’. For that matter, I don’t know how many strands of hair are there on my head. Lots of work. No time to stop and stare, sorry, count. Further, Hair is not like, say, teeth. If you ask me how many teeth I have, I can count them and answer you immediately. If you throw at me the query “How many fingers?” then also I can catch it without any difficulty and answer back in no time. But, this issue called ‘Hair’ is not an easy thing to comprehend.

All Toms, Dicks and Harrys have hair. This contention doesn’t exclude Rosys and Chandras. Illiterate – literate, rich – poor, doctor – patient, man – woman, college-professor – elementary- school teacher, immaculate beauty – intermediate beauty… Anybody and Everybody possess hair. When our ‘bigwig’ Secretary and ‘bigwig’ Chairman too possess it, just imagine its reach!

I have been living for a long time and have been meeting very many persons. And, the heads of each and every one of them have hair!It is wrong to refer to ‘Hair’ in the singular form. For, there is not just one hair on one’s head. If it is to be so – that there is just one hair on one’s head, then, preserving it would prove a Herculean task. All those in Chennai have hair. It is in the length and breadth, strength and shade that there exist several differences.

I had been on a tour once, for the purpose of collecting historical and otherwise information about ‘Hair’. Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore, Kanchipuram, Chidambaram, Neyveli, Pondichery – so I went about, from place to place, till my pocket turned penniless. What a surprise! The people in those places too had hairs! If so, Hair is a common human feature. Hair is an equalizer. While pondering over a person it is not easy to recollect him or visualize him without his hair. None can overlook or ignore ‘Hair’ just like that.

Hair is not something cheap or a ‘two-pence’ affair. And, to hide it wearing a hat, it is no shameful nudity also. And, there is a lot more on Hair. I am a ‘Hairologist’. Or rather, an expert in the Science of Hair!. You may be surprised. I have studied Anthropology. In our practical exam the Museum Curator gave me a long hair and asked me to name the ‘race’ of the man it belonged to. I examined it minutely for fifteen minutes and told that it was not human hair at all. My answer proved right. And, I came out a winner in the examination. A hair had paved the way for my victory means, how important and significant it is! It is high time we had realized it. As per Anthropology, human hairs are of four types. That is not included in this story.

This hair (don’t ask me which hair, thereby obstructing the flow of my story) has interfered in my life on so many an occasion. It may do so in the future also.After marriage the realization dawned on me that I was not a handsome hubby to my wife. I was a ‘hairsome hubby’ to her.

Afterwards, when I was going by cycle I had a hairline escape from an auto-rickshaw coming towards me at a hair-rising speed. It was then that I had come to know the length and breadth of a strand of hair. Only that knowledge born of one’s own experience is real and wholesome. True. Thus, I am enriching my knowledge of ‘Hair’ step by step. At least in one Trade one should be a Master. Why not it be the Department or Faculty of Hair?In my boyhood, when I was an ignorant lad I came across a one rupee note wherein the name ‘Maalini’ was written in the tiny little space of the valuable paper. And, the name was underlined and underneath the line the words, ‘hair-pauper’ (Mayiraandi’) could be seen. That is, I should divide ‘Maalini’ by ‘hair-pauper’. I have always been a dull-headed fella when it comes to Mathematics. Hence, I felt that I should go, seek the help of our tuition-master.

But, I didn’t, for fear and apprehension came in the way. But, Paulraj master was a very soft-spoken and an affectionate, friendly person. I asked my class-mate Sahadevan. But, saying, “Like you I am also very weak in Maths”, he went his way, without lending me any help.Even in the fifteenth year of my age I was unable to know the answer as to how many times the ‘hair-pauper’ can be distributed into Maalini. How to unravel this mystery?

Recently I was pondering over the phrase ‘hair-pauper’ (‘Mayiraandi’ in Tamil) for quite a great deal of time. In Tamil ‘aandi’ means a pauper or a beggar or a mendicant. Then, Mayiraandi means one who doesn’t have hair. So, henceforth we can call those bald-headed ones as ‘semi hair pauper’ in English.

Upon my head a small little space would be vacant. Taking this factor into account I am also a ‘hair-pauper’ or ‘semi hair-pauper’, to some extent. But, the vacant spot would be invisible as it is covered by the hairs on the other sides of the head. If I am a man of integrity, while combing my hair I shouldn’t try to hide the vacant spot, spreading the hairs on it but leave it as it is, empty and barren, for all the eyes to see. But, as it is not so, you can call me either a ‘fakemayiraandi’ or ‘mayirfake aandi’, as suits your whims and fancies.

A Point of Note : There is no need to regard this term as an abuse and confuse yourself. No need for wig, artificial hair and all that. The world is inclusive of all sorts of people. Those with ‘mayir’ and also ‘mayiraandi’. A seat or berth in heaven would be surely reserved for you. Or, at least your name would be in the ‘waiting list’.There is still a lot more to be said on Hair. During our teens four of us would enter inside our college canteen. We would place our order for ice-cream. This Gopi too possessed a kind of playful meanness. After finishing half the ice-cream, plucking a strand of hair from his head and dropping it into the half-empty cup, he would shout,”What is this? Hair and all are added in the ice-cream… what the hell is happening in the canteen?. At once he would be supplied with a new cup of ice-cream – full and brimming. We would address Gopi as ‘Hair-pauper’. Sometimes he would get angry. Still, we wouldn’t care. Truth can be uttered by anybody, anywhere, anytime.

The heart –hair connection should be dealt with in detail in this story. Without that the story would be incomplete. Due to some amoral (Immoral and Amorous combined) feelings or stiffness of the heart, or, due to exam fear and the subsequent heaviness in the heart, some male or female students would pluck off some strands of hair from their respective heads and throw them away. They won’t feel the pain. This is something done unconsciously. Due to this act there would arise a black round vacant space or spot on some part of the head. This is a kind of Mental Illness’. I don’t remember the name of it.

In 1991 my brother had come from America. I asked him whether those people in New Jersey too possessed hair. My query flooded him with dreadful confusion.It took a long time to make him understand. I told him that I was involved in an intense research about Hair and that I was finding out whether the people all over the world, without the exception of anybody had hair and that I was collecting relevant information either through the books or by having a dialogue with those coming from other countries. He congratulated me and conveyed his best-wishes for the success of my strange and unique Hair-Research. Further, I told him that if only I had the money I would go on a global tour and undertake field-work and so find out directly whether the people all over the world did have hair. My brother applauded my great thirst for knowledge.In 1995, sometime in November, a student from Sweden by name Maria had come to our section for acquiring practical training in the Field of Social Work. She too had hair. It was slightly brownish. After a day or two I asked her whether the inhabitants of Sweden too had hair. The query shocked her very much. Then I enlightened her about my research. She promised that as long as she stayed in Chennai she would help me in my research in all possible manner.I felt a kind of relief in securing a supportive soul. But, that was only temporary. By the end of December Maria returned to Sweden.

There is a college in our office campus. Foreigners would come there for some seminar, symposium etc. Most of the time we would also be invited to ‘grace the occasion’. I became interested in seeing the foreigners. All for the sake of my Hair-Study only.

In the seminars lunch would be offered to all. Self-Service only. Serving our own selves we can eat to our hearts’ content.

Once, in the ‘symposium-biriyani’ a Caucasian hair was mixed. That gave me immense happiness. The worthiness and real value of Hair is known only to experienced ‘Hairists’ like me. I was overwhelmed by the urge to share my happiness with somebody. With the hair-mixed biriyani plate in my hand I knocked at the door of the college principal’s cabin and asked, “May I come in Sir?”. Permission was granted. The sight of a man entering inside with a plate full of biriyani must have given rise to some strange sensaion – a mixture of surprise and fear in his mind. And, he opened his mouth to say something. But, I overtook him.“See, there is a fabulous Caucasian hair in your biriyani! See how beautiful it is!” – So saying I held it in my hand carefully and extended it towards him. That unsettled him greatly; shook him to the core, to say the least. That a fine hair could cause so much imbalance in one, that too holding such a high post and being in the higher strata of the society was beyond my wildest imagination. I felt extremely sad at his utter lack of ‘hair-sense and sensitivity’. I came out of the room feeling miserable.In the mean time Maria had written to me. She had conveyed her enquiries and best-wishes to my co-workers and also enquired after my research and the progress I had made in my mission. Writing a detailed letter I posted it to Sweden. I closed the letter saying, “I pray to all the Chennai-based Almighty’s for the well-being of your hair”. Maria’s brunet hair came to my mind.

You would have come across those innumerable shampoo advertisements on the Small Screen wherein young beauties spread and swing their voluptuous strands of hair hither and thither, far and wide. I don’t know what sort of impact those scenes have on you…but, viewing them I would always get the itch to caress them. Once, I disclosed this itch to my better-half. She called me a womanizer. ‘Let anyone call me anything. I would be ceaselessly researching in right earnest, bent on unraveling the mysteries of Hair’. So I firmly decided.Centering around ‘hair’ an incident took place in my life recently. A month back, a small growth could be seen in my left cheek as like that of a mole. I could have left it to remain where it was. I went on fiddling it with my fingers and it grew bigger. My wife said, “In the old movies the villains would always have a big black round patch like this on their cheeks. You look exactly like that. In other words, you look every inch a villain. For god’s sake, go see the doctor”. I tried raising my voice and arguing that I had a right to look the way I pleased, but it paid no dividend.The Chief Social-Worker of our Project Office suggested the name of a great Nature Cure. Tying the mole with a strand of hair tightly and so keeping it, the villainous mole would drop on its own in one or two days”, said he. But, I didn’t consider it seriously.

The Dispensary which I would usually visit gave me a recommendation letter to the ‘Skin Department’ of a big hospital in that locality. I went there the next day. The doctor there was the very personification of love and compassion. He listened to my complaint with great concern and put forth several questions related to the problem at hand. In the end, he gave me a recommendation-letter for another bigger hospital. In the out-patient slip, under the heading Disease he wrote ‘contagious disease’ and that ‘Cryo-therapy by surgery is recommended’. But, if the mole would be removed by surgery then such growths in any other part of the face would surface on their own free will’, said he. He also asked whether there was any such growth in any other part of the body. Taking off my shirt I showed him those two patches on the left side of my chest. The doctor subjected them to minute scrutiny, inspecting them for a long time. At the time of taking leave he told me in a tone of real concern,“Please come and tell me afterwards as to what Treatment they gave you.” The care and concern he had for follow-up action moved me greatly.The next day I was in the ‘Skin Department’ of that bigger hospital. There was a young lady doctor. The two senior doctors who were in charge of performing ‘Cryo-therapy’ had been transferred to different places, said she and also informed that the treatment facility was available in the Governemnt General Hospital. Or, if I wanted I could have the general surgery done in their hospital itself, said she, as an afterthought. I went to the Surgery Wing.A young doctor. After examining my body he wrote ‘Condyloma-Multiple’ in the prescription-slip. If I were to go in for surgery there would be every possibility of my acquiring such growths in other parts of the face, informed he. He treated me with so much care and compassion that I almost swooned.

The next Tuesday I was in the Skin Department of the Government General Hospital. An elderly doctor. In front of him five Medical College female students. The doctor asked where I was employed. I told him the name of our Social-Work Organization and that I was working there as a social-worker. “These things are common for social-workers. Nothing surprising about a social-worker getting such growths”. Much as I tried, it proved beyond my comprehension to realize the connection between such mole-like growth and social-work.

Then, I told him that which the young doctor at the ‘big hospital’ told me, that if I were to go in for ordinary surgery I would surely get such growths in other parts of the face. This angered him very much. “This is no Condyloma-Multiple. This is a wart. You are talking too much. If one talks too much he is bound to become confusion-confounded. No need to advise me what I should do and what I should not. Shut up”, roared he. My face turned lifeless. I shut my mouth tightly and hung my head. The doctor told me something. My ears didn’t hear anything. I got up abruptly. Two feet away a medical student pressed a slip in my palm. Receiving it, I left the place without a backward glance. And, without fail, I brought back the hung head to its original position.

After coming out I glanced at the prescription-slip. Under the heading ‘Disease’ it was scribbled DPN’ and further below, “Come on Thursday at 8 a.m and see the doctor…”

True. A doctor decrying the diagnosis of another physician is the done thing here, if not everywhere. There is nothing surprising about it.
