About
2000 years old, this must be one of the most ancient corpuses of Women Poetry
in world literature, giving it an intrinsic importance.
A
unique feature of Sangam Poetry is its organic linkage to Nature . The
situations, similes, metaphors and leitmotifs are all intertwined with Nature,
and are marked by sheer lyrical finesse and poetic allure.
Female
sexuality, the passionate bond between the girl and her lover, the agony of
separation, outpouring of suppressed ardour and a celebration of the female
body have a strong presence in these poems. This has potential value in sociological
and cultural-anthropological studies of ancient societies from a feminist
perspective.

My friend dear!
Pallor has come to be
my body’s second nature.
My love the cure resides
in his heart loveless
in a distant somewhere.
Directs me my intellect
‘Go forth unto him’.
Stay but here
stresses my reserve.
Should he want to inquire
‘How indeed are you?’
apt is the time now
for my lover
the lord of seashore yonder
lush with thorny pandanus.
